A philanthropy is a charitable organization that an organization chooses to support financially. Phi Mu’s philanthropy is Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
When I was going through recruitment week, Phi Mu’s philanthropy, specifically, stood out to me. When I was younger, I spent a lot of time at Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. I had multiple surgeries on my ears because of internal damage. They had to reconstruct both of my eardrums, so that I could hear again. There were a lot of scary days, but the staff at Children’s Hospital truly made a major impact on my life because of the way they treated me!

They always made me feel safe and loved even when things were scary! Another reason that this philanthropy stood out to me was because I am a nursing major and I hope that one day I can work at Children’s Hospital helping kids who are feeling scared and uneasy just like I did. As soon as I found out that this was the organization that Phi Mu supported, I felt an instant connection to this sisterhood and the girls who shared stories similar to mine! I felt like God had lined everything up perfectly. I immediately knew that Phi Mu was my home.
Phi Mu has raised over 19 million dollars for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. All of the funds that we raise stay in the local community for patient care, new equipment, and research on children’s diseases, illnesses, and injuries. My favorite philanthropy fundraising event is our Dance Marathon, which is our biggest philanthropy event in the fall. At the Dance Marathon, different organizations all over JSU’s campus come together to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by donating money & participating in a group dance competition and other games.

It’s so much fun & truly brings everyone together in a special way! It is so special to know that we are helping to save lives by giving money to support a philanthropy that touches home to so many people in our community.
I would encourage every girl rushing this fall to truly think about which philanthropy you feel drawn to during recruitment week. It is so exciting to be a part of something bigger than yourself! Every organization feels passionate about their philanthropy & they want you to feel the same!
